TONIGHT AT SIGHT SCHOOL, 7PM

Sight School is pleased to host this one-night exhibition and public reading of Chicago-based collective Temporary Services’ newspaper titled, “Art Work: A National Conversation on Art, Labor and Economics.” This event will take place from 7-9pm on Wednesday December 16th.

A handful of local artists, writers and curators including Sean Fletcher & Isabel Reichert, Lynne McCabe, Julian Meyers, Ted Purves, and Natasha Wheat will deliver public readings of texts directly from or related to the newspaper, while providing analysis and commentary in an informal reading-room environment. Readings will feature works by Chris Burden, Carolina Caycedo, Cooley Windsor & Futurefarmers, and the Guerilla Art Action Group (GAAG), among others. In addition, this event will serve as a distribution point for free printed copies of the newspaper. Participants will be encouraged contribute to the event and participate in discussion on how to build an economically viable arts community in the Bay Area.

Born 1973, Zurich, Switzerland/Lives and works New York City

Urs Fischer was born in Zurich in 1973, and currently lives and works in New York City. He was included in Unmonumental, the New Museum’s inaugural exhibition for the SANAA-designed building in 2007. Fischer’s work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions in European museums, including the Kunsthaus in Zurich; the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam; and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. His work was also included in the 2006 Whitney Biennial.

The ForestiereUnderground Gardens in Fresno:

Starting in 1906 Sicilian immigrant Baldasare Forestiere, a vineyardist and horticulturalist, began carving a mysterious underground escape from the San Joaquin Valley's powerful heat. Now referred to as the Forestiere Underground Gardens his home sprawls across ten acres, and has over 100 rooms, and is listed as a California Historic Landmark.

Forestiere's family had been citrus growers in Messina, Sicily. He came to America in 1900 when he was 21 years old, wth dreams of establishing his own farm in California. After eight years as a construction worker in the new york subways, he has saved enough to purchase land in Fresno.

Unfortunately this dream shriveled, and the land he had bought turned out to be solid rock, beneath a thin layer of topsoil.

Forestiere spent forty years carving a mysterious underground escape from the San Joaquin Valley's powerful heat. Fashioned after the "visions stored in my mind," his caverns are a network of gardens illuminated with skylights, as well as comfortable living spaces for himself, including a kitchen, bedroom and fish pond. He was even able to grow his fruit trees- citrus, dates, olives and much more, as well as a bounty of other vegetation.

Years before Forestiere died he began building an Italian restaurant with a drive in tunnel with valet.

Alfred Jensen

In 1973, Jensen writes of his paintings:

"The idea of correspondence has great significance and replaces the idea of causality, for things are connected rather than caused. Thus lovely things summon others among the class of lovely things, repulsive things summon others among the class of repulsive things. This arises from the complementary way in which a thing of the same class responds. This idea that things belonging to the same class resonate or energize each other has guided me in producing my 1973 paintings."¹³

Rube Goldberg:

Reuben Lucius Goldberg (July 4, 1883 – December 7, 1970) was an American cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer and inventor. Goldberg is best known for a series of popular cartoons he created depicting complex devices that perform simple tasks in indirect, convoluted ways – now known as Rube Goldberg machines. Goldberg received many honors in his lifetime including a Pulitzer Prize for his political cartooning in 1948 and the Banshees' Silver Lady Award 1959.^[1]

This was an incredible coffee. It was mixed with hazelnut, topped with whip creme and cinnamon. A giant monster of a coffee. I could only drink a quarter of this bad boy, but every sip was incredible.

This fall the Guggenheim inaugurates a new annual art event: artist Rob Pruitt presents The First Annual Art Awards at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in association with White Columns. The Art Awards celebrates select individuals, exhibitions, and projects that have made a significant impact on the field of contemporary art during the past year.

Rob Pruitt announced Joan Jonas being given a lifetime achievement award.

"It's the shamanistic idea - the performer goes through the actions so that the audience can experience them also... It takes you into a space that you wouldn't otherwise be in."

The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) is presenting the work of nine Bay Area artists in its NextNewexhibition that features work from emerging talent on the region’s contemporary art scene. This year’s show subtitledGreen, surveys fresh perspectives on climate change and related environmental and conservation issues.

Artists represented in the exhibition include Michelle Blade, Colette Campbell-Jones, Misako Inaoka, Vanessa Marsh, Carson Murdach, Sandra Ono, Ryan Pierce, Rebecca Rothfus, and Michael Ryan. NextNew: Green opens on July 7th and runs through September 20th in the ICA’s Main Gallery. An opening reception is being held on August 7th.

This year’s NextNew artists are recent graduates of regional MFA programs who reflect on “green” as source material for their ideas and work. “One of the distinguishing characteristics of this year’s show is how the artists have succeeded in marrying their conceptual goals with their chosen materials,” explains Cathy Kimball, ICA Executive Director.

On view is work in a range of mediums, including miniature sculptures of invented creatures by Misako Inaoka, and Michael Ryan’s life-size floating, breathing specters on life-support. Painters Michelle Blade’s, Carson Murdach’s and Ryan Pierce’s richly-rendered paintings depict apocalyptic dreamscapes, post-industrial landscapes, and historically-referenced seascapes devoured by urban sprawl. Digital photographic collages by Colette Campbell-Jones and mixed media pieces by Vanessa Marsh shine a spotlight on the intentional and unintentional footprints left by visitors in once remote and uninhabited natural settings.

“The big, unwieldy topic of ‘green’ encompasses everything from re-using lunch bags to halting global warming,” muses ICA Assistant Curator, Susan O’Malley. “To successfully tackle this theme we selected artists who are remarkable in part by how they personalize the topic and keenly engage the viewer by presenting curious combinations of beauty and destruction, natural and man-made materials, and classic and contemporary subject matter.”

Alexis Mackenzie's dreamlike collages intertwine the style of early 1900's Dadaist Max Ernst with a strong botanical element to create strangely powerful scenarios. Benign elements such as flowers, human and animal figures, and other assorted Victoriana graft together symbiotically in tableaux which seem to deal simultaneously with both evolution and entropy. The resulting images pay homage to the Surrealist importance of the subconscious, where the meaning is left deliberately ambiguous.

Her solo show, "Never Be Sad", at Parklife opens Friday June 26th from 7pm - 10pm...Don't miss it!
